BEAT is again partnering with the Housatonic Valley Association (HVA) to organize river cleanups on the Housatonic River in 2013. (See photos on our Facebook page.)
Saturday, July 27 – 9 am – 1 pm – meet at Wahconah Park – This should be great! The water levels are very low. Lots of trash exposed.
We will all meet at the parking lot at Wahconah Park, 105 Wahconah Street in Pittsfield for snacks at the start and come back here for lunch at the end. (google map) We will fan out from here to tackle the places on the river most in need of a cleanup.
What YOU should bring: Water, sunscreen, insect repellent – wear old clothes and sturdy footwear, you will get wet and dirty! Old sneakers, rubber boots, hip boots, or waders are very useful. What WE provide: Morning snacks! LUNCH! Trash bags and gloves.
For more information, contact Jane – jane@thebeatnews.org or 413-230-7321 – or Alison – adixon@hvatoday.org or 413-394-9796.
Pick up litter along the riverbank or jump right in to pull out tires and refrigerators. Whatever your level of comfort, come help us make a difference.

PREVIOUS 2013 CLEANUPS:
- Saturday, May 11 – 9 am – 1 pm – by canoe/kayak – registration required
This cleanup started from Decker Landing in Lenox, paddled upstream and downstream to clean trash from strainers (downed trees catching trash in the river), and then paddled back to Decker Landing for lunch: Panera’s, Guido’s, Price Chopper and Baba Louies’ donated items for lunch.
- Saturday, June 22 – 9 am – 1 pm – meet at Wahconah Park – CANCELLED the water levels were too high!
Please let us know if you would like to help.
In the past, every one of these events has been hard work, but a lot of fun. There are opportunities for all levels of participation – from making sandwiches and picking up pizza, to picking up trash along the riverbanks, to getting right in and pulling our tires and shopping carts. Everyone is welcome.
