Meadowmaking for Beginners

February 7 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Part of Grow Native Massachusetts’ Evenings with Experts series

Meadow-style plantings are becoming increasingly popular, particularly as an alternative to the lawns that cover tens of millions of acres in the U.S. Our turf monocultures have many detrimental environmental impacts, including that they offer very little habitat value to insect pollinators and other at-risk wildlife. But while replacing them with native plant landscapes is vital in our fight to halt biodiversity loss, creating a lasting and ecologically valuable meadow is, alas, not as simple as deciding to stop mowing the grass. Landscape designer and author Owen Wormser will detail a range of different design, site preparation and maintenance approaches, and discuss how to choose the right ones based on your resources and landscape conditions. He will also describe strategies for working with neighbors, HOAs and municipalities so that your blossoming meadow landscape is welcomed into the community.

Owen Wormser is the principal at Abound Design, which provides design and installation services with a focus on creating sustainability, regeneration, and beauty. A newly revised second edition of his book, Lawns Into Meadows, Growing a Regenerative Landscape* was released in the fall of 2022.

In person at New England Botanic Garden at Tower Hill, 11 French Drive, Boylston, MA or Online via Zoom
