Ashmere Island Paddle
August 16, 2023 @ 10:00 am - 2:00 pm
Join Berkshire Natural Resources Council (BNRC) for a relaxing paddle and picnic at the pristine Lake Ashmere in Hinsdale! Bring your own canoe, kayak, or paddle board and a picnic lunch. We’ll put in at the boat launch ramp (see meeting location below) at the south end of Lake Ashmere, then paddle under the road to the island at the north end of the lake, where we’ll picnic & swim if desired.
Lake Ashmere is 217 acres of pristine water lined with cottages. The lake was created in 1875 with a dam built by Crane Paper Co. In 1979 the dam and lake became the property of the state of MA, which still controls the lake today. With a maximum depth of 23 feet and an average depth of 8 feet, it’s a warm water fishery, with pickerel, smallmouth and largemouth bass, crappie, pumpkinseed & some northern pike. BNRC cares for the 7-acre forested Ashmere Island in the north part of the lake.
