Green Drinks Pittsfield – What’s Happenin’ in Hopkins Forest, Williams College’s Environmental Field Station?
November 16, 2021 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm
Drew Jones is the Manager of Hopkins Memorial Forest (HMF) in Williamstown. He has worked at HMF for 22 years and is a Wildlife Biologist. Drew has been involved in studies of amphibians, breeding birds, and saw-whet owls, some of which have engaged local citizen scientists. He also coordinates the Forest’s elementary education program — bringing classes from area school districts out for hands-on, field learning. He’ll discuss some of this work as well as the role of long term, place-based ecological research in our rapidly changing ecosphere.

Hopkins Forest in Williamstown is a 2600 acre preserve owned by Williams College for research and teaching in the natural world. There, faculty and students from Williams and beyond have been involved in studies ranging from long-term meteorological and forest stand monitoring; to investigations of the impacts of mowing regimes on goldenrod communities; to a rangewide analysis of the population genetics of a native species of mustard. Most recently studies on the isotopic and ecosystem levels have been established. We expect that the latter will produce models to predict the rates of carbon sequestration based on different soil nutrient levels in temperate forests. In addition, Drew has been involved in studies of amphibians, breeding birds, and saw-whet owls, some of which have engaged local citizen scientists. He also coordinates the Forest’s elementary education program — bringing classes from area school districts out for hands-on, field learning. He’ll discuss some of this work as well as the role of long term, place-based ecological research in our rapidly changing ecosphere.
