Thanks NC,
We absolutely have to speak up and speak out. I think we can change the political climate and the social climate (the good kind of climate change)and take back our democracy.

Hi Bruce,

Something that is overwelming and troubling is how this basic information is not available to the average citizen who is paying through the nose in taxes every year, and has to go to a food pantry to survive. (More and more citizens this year are reportedly using food pantries. This not only includes the working poor, but what is left of the middle class.)

If this is the case, it would seem that average citizens like ourselves need to take the bull by the horns... communicate with one another and begin grass roots organizations to take back our country and ultimately our lives.

No matter what is said on the mainstream media, it will be necessary for average citizens to speak up, make these statistics heard and ultimately acknowledged.

Much Praise for an article well done.
Thank you for your research and ability to share.
I will circulate this to my friends.

Best,
NC

Thanks Crystal.

It certainly is an injustice. I wrote this reply to the GE video in 6 installments. You can find all 6 pulled together in one place here.

August 6, 2011: DuPont has posted a letter announcing the suspension of sales, and instituting a return-for-refund policy. The company says it regret for "tree injuries," but that problems were caused by incorrect application of the chemical, which was sold only to licensed professionals. I wonder if we'll see Imprelis' active ingredient, Aptexor, come back in another product.

A further thought. BEAT is currently working to get storm drains disconnected from the river. The idea is that the outflow from storm drains should carry water to places where that water can infiltrate through vegetation and soil before arriving at the river. In the meantime, don't throw anything in storm drains that shouldn't be going into the river.

Hi Milo,
Sorry for the late response. I was away for a while. I understand your position, but let me point out a few things. First, it's not a matter of agreeing or disagreeing. The fact of the matter is that government officials are not above the laws they create. The city's behavior is a violation of state and federal law. Second, in the middle of the controversy over how best to get GE's PCBs out of the river we should not be dumping more pollutants in. Certainly the City of Pittsfield should not be doing this. I agree that the amount dumped from bridges this year in Pittsfield could be considered "a drop in the bucket" as you say. But if everybody keeps putting their drops in the bucket, eventually the bucket overflows. The cost of disposing of the snow properly and legally is not great. This was not a matter of money. It was a matter of convenience. As for the fact that it would have ended up in the river anyway, let me point out that water that travels to the river through natural channels - that is by percolating through vegetation and soil - is cleaned and purified to a great extent. The salts will not reach the river if the snow is disposed of properly, and proper disposal does not include dumping the snow over storm drains. I hope that helps, and thanks for being interested. Please feel free to let me know if you disagree.
